The duty of
Christians and Jews everywhere is clearly stated throughout the Bible.
Our duty is to see
that the needs of God's poor are taken care of: the widow, the
fatherless, the stranger, the oppressed, and those being robbed of
fair wages.
When we fail the
poor, we ourselves will pay a heavy price for doing so.
"Should
ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former
prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the
cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the
plain? And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying, Thus
speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew
mercy and compassions every man to his brother: And oppress
not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor
the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his
brother in your heart. But they refused to hearken, and pulled
away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.
Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should
hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his
spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the
LORD of hosts. Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and
they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear,
saith the LORD of hosts..." (Zechariah
7:7-13 KJV)
It's has always
been inevitable that the poor get poorer as the rich get richer - and
the rich get more self-righteous. Also at certain point it is
also inevitable that somebody, like the poor themselves, will act out
God's wrath upon the rich:
"He
striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others; Because
they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways: So
that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and
he heareth the cry of the afflicted. When he giveth quietness,
who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can
behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man
only: That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared." (Job
34:26-30 KJV)
This cycle is part
of the poor's new safety net provided by the Man of the people, Jesus
Christ, in the Plan of Salvation:
"The
LORD hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely
I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and
the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou
hast laboured: But they that have gathered it shall eat it,
and praise the LORD; and they that have brought it together shall
drink it in the courts of my holiness. Go through, go through the
gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the
highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people." (Isaiah
62:8-10 KJV)
So how did we,
western society as a whole, reach the miserable state we're in, this
state in which we call the poor "thieves" of our taxes?
Where we drop
high-tech bombs on poor people in other countries because we're terrified
of them?
Through
selfishness and greed! Look at us! So fat with food and material
things, yet so crucially short on compassion, decency, and common humanity.
Here is a
refresher course of Bible verses that tell us why we
are terrified of the poor people of the Middle East: It's what
we mistakenly call God's wrath, but is really the righteous judgment
of the poor upon the rich...
Jesus came
as a man because the poor were oppressed by self-righteous wealthy people:
-
"The
Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to
preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted,
to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to
the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach
the acceptable year of the Lord." (Luke
4:18-19 KJV)
What are Jesus'
requirements for entering His Kingdom with Him?
-
"...Depart
from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the
devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat:
I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye
took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and
in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer
him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a
stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto
thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch
as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me." (Matthew
25:41-45 KJV)
Why did 9/11
happen and why is this the end?
-
"Her
princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to
shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. And
her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity,
and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when
the LORD hath not spoken. The people of the land have used oppression,
and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy:
yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. And I sought for a
man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap
before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none." (Ezekiel
22:27-30)
-
"The
LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh
proud things: Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our
lips are our own: who is lord over us? For the oppression of the poor,
for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith
the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. The
words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of
earth, purified seven times." (Psalms
12:3-6 KJV)
Who are God's
chosen people?
-
"Hearken,
my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world
rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to
them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich
men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they
blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?" (James
2:5-7)
What do the wicked do?
-
"God
standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the
gods. How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the
wicked? Selah. Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to
the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them
out of the hand of the wicked. They know not, neither will they
understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the
earth are out of course. I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are
children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall
like one of the princes. Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou
shalt inherit all nations." (Psalms
82:1-8 KJV)
-
"The
wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that
forget God. For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: the
expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever. Arise, O LORD;
let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight. Put them
in fear, O LORD: that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah." (Psalms
9:17-20 KJV)
What will we be
judged on?
-
"The
LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and
the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil
of the poor is in your houses. What mean ye that ye beat my
people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord
GOD of hosts." (Isaiah
3:14-15 KJV)
-
"Woe
unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write
grievousness which they have prescribed; To turn aside the needy from
judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people,
that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!
And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation
which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where
will ye leave your glory?" (Isaiah
10:1-3 KJV)
-
"Hear
this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor
of the land to fail, Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that
we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat,
making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the
balances by deceit? That we may buy the poor for silver, and the
needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat? The
LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never
forget any of their works."
(Amos 8:4-8 KJV)
-
"Thus
speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew
mercy and compassions every man to his brother: And oppress not
the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and
let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. But
they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped
their ears, that they should not hear."
(Zechariah 7:9-11 KJV)
There are many,
many more. Poor people pray more than rich people. God hears them
more clearly because they are always asking Him for justice and
judgment. It's as simple as that:
-
"For
among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that
setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of
birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become
great, and waxen rich. They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they
overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause,
the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the
right of the needy do they not judge. Shall I not visit for these
things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation
as this?" (Jeremiah
5:26-30 KJV)
-
"In
thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of
thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee
have they vexed the fatherless and the widow. Thou hast despised
mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths. In thee are men that
carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains:
in the midst of thee they commit lewdness. In thee have they
discovered their fathers' nakedness: in thee have they humbled her
that was set apart for pollution. And one hath committed abomination
with his neighbour's wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his
daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his
father's daughter. In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou
hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy
neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord
GOD. Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain
which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst
of thee. Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the
days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will
do it." (Ezekiel
22:7-14 KJV)
-
"And
I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift
witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and
against false swearers, and against those that oppress the
hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless,
and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not
me, saith the LORD of hosts." (Malachi
3:5 KJV)
-
"Happy
is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the
LORD his God: Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that
therein is: which keepeth truth for ever: Which executeth judgment
for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The
LORD looseth the prisoners: The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind:
the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the
righteous: The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the
fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down." (Psalms
146:5-9 KJV)
-
"If
any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue,
but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure
religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit
the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep
himself unspotted from the world." (James
1:26-27 KJV)
-
"Behold,
ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of
wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice
to be heard on high. Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for
a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a
fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I
have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the
heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye
break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry,
and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when
thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not
thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as
the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy
righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be
thy rereward." (Isaiah
58:4-8 KJV)
-
""He
shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the
children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout
all generations." (Psalms
72:4-5 KJV)
